A SaaS product needs more than an initial build. Architecture, reliability, delivery practices and engineering capability affect the company’s ability to support customers and develop the product. A fractional CTO can provide leadership across those decisions when the scope and capacity are clearly defined.
Explain the product, customer expectations and current engineering structure. A small product finding its market and a platform serving demanding enterprise customers need different operating practices. Avoid selecting a provider solely because it recognizes your programming languages.
Ask whether the executive will manage engineers, coach an existing lead or advise management. Identify responsibility for architecture, release practices, cloud spending and incident escalation. A part-time allocation should not imply continuous operational coverage without an agreed arrangement.
Discuss how product priorities are reconciled with technical work. The CTO should explain tradeoffs in terms that management can assess, including what can be postponed and which risks need immediate attention. Require documentation that the internal team can maintain.
Kinori Labs, Delta Systems and Reyem Tech publish CTO offerings with SaaS coverage. Some providers also offer development capacity. Ask how leadership decisions are separated from the sale and acceptance of implementation work.
A combined provider can simplify coordination, but your company should still control repositories, cloud accounts and documentation. Establish how work would transfer if you change providers or hire a permanent leader.
It may be, but it needs a defined scope. A general architecture review is different from an independent security assessment or a formal transaction review. Ask what evidence will be produced, which limitations will be stated and where specialists are needed.
