Make an informed decision

Find expertise that fits your business.

Separate product technology from internal systems

A technology company may need a CTO to lead the product and engineering organization. Another business may use the title for internal systems, vendor management and technology investment. Both can be legitimate services, but they should not be treated as interchangeable when building a shortlist.

Describe the decisions the executive will own, the teams involved and the systems that matter. If the need is mainly enterprise IT, discuss whether a CIO remit better describes the work. If it includes security leadership, identify the responsibilities that require specialist expertise.

Test how strategy becomes execution

Ask the provider to explain how a business priority becomes a technical roadmap and how that roadmap is revised. The answer should include capacity, dependencies and a way to evaluate competing demands. A technology strategy is useful when it guides choices the team can actually carry out.

Discuss the relationship with existing engineering leaders and vendors. Decide who approves architecture, sets delivery priorities and accepts implementation work. Clarify incident coverage and the availability expected between scheduled executive sessions.

Compare firms with different structures

Fortium Partners, JetThoughts and TechCXO publish technology leadership offerings within different firm models. Some include implementation capability or other executive functions. Ask how those resources become part of a specific engagement and what additional fees apply.

Evaluate the assigned executive through a comparable operating problem. Experience with a similar product stage, delivery organization or transition is more useful than a long list of tools. Request references that can speak to judgment and follow-through.

How can the company avoid dependence on one person?

Maintain ownership of code, infrastructure accounts and documentation. Require decision records and a handoff plan. Identify an internal owner for ongoing practices and a coverage process if the executive is unavailable.
